![]() When the lake dried, it left behind two modern lakes, Poopó and Uru Uru, and two major salt deserts, Salar de Coipasa and the larger Salar de Uyuni. Some 40.000 years ago, the area was part of Lake Minchin, a giant prehistoric lake. It is located in the Department of Potosi in southwest Bolivia, near the crest of the Andes, at 3.650 meters above sea level. Multi-day tours that go back to San Pedro de Atacama will depart the Uyuni Salt Flats before sunset.The beautiful Uyuni salt flats (or Salar de Uyuni) is with its 10.582 square km (4.085 square miles) the world’s largest salt flat. ![]() And while you might not be able to see the approach in the dark, you will arrive there at sunrise. You can even take a dip in natural hot springs! As I understand it, you will have to get up at dawn on the last day of the tour to arrive at Salar de Uyuni. You can expect to drive through (seemingly) untouched wilderness to see strange rock formations, geysers, and flocks of flamingos in gem-coloured lagoons. On the other hand, you experience so much more of the land when you go the multi-day tour route. ![]() Since your tour ends at Uyuni, day trips typically don’t leave the Salar until after sunset. Also, the sun was already up and I was able to witness our entry into the world’s largest salt flat. I didn’t have to get up at the crack of dawn to arrive at Uyuni (where all day trips begin). Since the day tour starts so close to the salt flats, I feel like you get more time at the Salar itself. Do you want to spend more time at the actual salt flats?
